MORE ABOUT EXPORT PACKAGING.

There are many different types of standard packaging for export. Wooden or cardboard boxes or cartons are probably the most common type of export packaging and always take the form of solid sides and a solid lid.

Packaging crates are like boxes but are made up of slatted timber sections. This allows the equipment and all the goods inside to be visible. Slatted creates are particularly useful if the goods must be inspected in transit.

EXPERT, EXPORT PACKAGING KNOW YOUR ISPM

ISPM stands for the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures or more simply

ISPM15 regulations for the use of wood or timber materials in standard export packaging.

The aim of the directive ISPM15 is to reduce the spread of disease and insect infestation that can affect plants and ecosystems (Pest Control). The regulation applies to the transport of goods between the EU and the rest of the world.

Timber is used in export packaging for items such as pallets, wooden boxes, shipping crates, skids and dunnage. The timber must be debarked and then heat treated and/or fumigated with methyl bromide. Any treated material will be stamped or branded with a mark of compliance to declare its condition. This stamp or brand is known as the ‘wheat stamp”.

It is important to note when using timber packaging solutions that the correct specification from the supply chain is made. The wrong timber or incorrect stamping can lead to freight being rejected.

BS1133 is a British Standard that provides comprehensive guidance on export packaging, specifically focusing on the construction and use of wooden boxes, cases, and crates. The standard is BS 1133-8:2011+A1:2016, and it’s widely recognized within the UK manufacturing and export packing industries.

This standard covers most, if not all, aspects of transport packaging, including protection of food products, protection from metal corrosion, wrapping, and more. It also provides specific details on wood species, sheet materials, and fastenings that are likely to be encountered in these sectors.

The main goal of BS1133 is to ensure the safe and secure transportation of goods, reducing the risk of damage during transit. It’s particularly important for businesses involved in export shipping, industrial packaging, and those who manufacture or use wooden crates & boxes.

BS1133 sets the benchmark for quality and safety in export packaging, ensuring that all wooden packing complies with international standards and is fit for purpose.

UKWPMP stands for the United Kingdom Wood Packaging Material Programme. It’s associated with ISPM15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15), which is a set of regulations designed to prevent the international transport and spread of disease and insects that could negatively affect plants or ecosystems.

The UKWPMP ensures that all wood packaging materials used in export, such as wooden pallets, crates, boxes, or dunnage, comply with these international standards. This typically involves treating the wood through heat treatment or fumigation with methyl bromide and marking it with a recognizable ISPM15 stamp.

This mark certifies that the wood packaging material has been treated accordingly and is safe for international transport. Businesses involved in international trade must ensure their wooden packaging adheres to these regulations to avoid shipment delays, quarantines, or potential fines.

BDL only use export packaging that meets the ISPM15, BS1133 or UKWPMP standards and regulations and can assure our customers that any shipment of their goods that we have packed for export is compliant, and we can advise customers who self-pack.
